How We Got Here

In February, Voter Choice Albany began a signature drive to put Ranked Choice Voting on the ballot. Over the next month, our dedicated team of volunteers knocked on thousands of doors in Albany telling the story of our group and why RCV was so important. In late March, COVID-19 cut this campaign short with the County’s shelter in place order, ending our signature gathering efforts. However, over one month, just a third of the time we had on our original timeline, our team of just 14 volunteers gathered over 600 signatures--over half the 1159 required to put RCV on the ballot.

While we were saddened to see our signature campaign end early, we knew that RCV wasnt over. Instead of waiting until 2022, VCA lobbied the City Council to honor the will of the voters and put RCV in the ballot. Due to unprecedented circumstances of COVID-19, the obvious popular support for RCV shown by our record of 70% of residents we talked to signing, and the fact that, given the full three months, we would have exceeded our goal, the City Council honored our effort and unanimously put RCV on the ballot.

Now, because of our effort, your support, and the City Council’s willingness to take action in such a difficult time, RCV is going before the voters as Measure BB.
